My friend stopped in the middle of a sentence. I had already prepared an answer, which was how I knew I had not really been listening.

I put the answer aside. In the pause that followed, she said something different from what I had expected. Something she might not have said if I had filled the silence.

Listening is not simply waiting without speaking. It is allowing another person’s words to change the shape of what we think we know.

There is a particular generosity in not rushing to be useful. Sometimes the most helpful thing we can offer is room: room for uncertainty, for an unfinished thought, for a feeling that has not yet found its name.

The next time someone tells you about their day, try asking one more question before offering your own story. You may find that the conversation you thought was ending is only beginning.
